5 Orthodontist-Unfriendly Things You Do To Your Teeth

Whether you are a newbie to the world of orthodontics or you are doing some research for your teenager, you already know that braces are a big commitment. Your goal is to end your treatment with a straight, healthy smile. Want to reach your goal? You must stop doing these things:

1. Eating Starches -- and not Brushing Afterward

You already know that you should not be eating sugary treats all day, but even starchy foods can contribute to bacteria growth. Starches to avoid include potatoes, breads, and pastas. If you do partake in a meal of starches, make sure to brush your teeth soon after. Plus, starch can get into your braces where it sticks and creates its own bacteria you will struggle to eliminate.

2. Putting Your Fingers in (and Around) Your Mouth

Everything you touch has the potential to transfer germs to your hand. Washing your hands often, especially before you eat, is a great way to prevent the spread of bacteria from your hands to your mouth. You also need to stop biting your nails, an action that facilitates bringing bacteria to your mouth. There's an added benefit here too. You will also avoid illnesses like influenza and the common cold.

3. Smoking Cigarettes

You already know that cigarettes are bad for your lungs; however, cigarettes are also extremely bad for your mouth. Tar and nicotine tear away at your gums, making it difficult for braces to work. Plus, they create additional bacteria, especially along the gum line. Additionally, smoking can discolor the aligner trays you use with Invisalign, ultimately giving your teeth a much more yellow appearance.

4. Chewing Ice Cubes (& Other Dangerous Foods)

It may seem like ice cubes are of no concern to you, but you would be wrong in this assumption. In fact, chewing on ice can actually damage your orthodontia. Ice can easily dislodge your brackets by the force of biting down and can even pop wires out of place. Not sure which other foods to avoid? Steer clear of beef jerky, whole apples, peanut brittle, and even the ends of your pens and pencils.

5. Avoiding Braces because You're an Adult

Braces are not only for children and teenagers. Plenty of American adults go to the orthodontist and receive braces each year. It is never too late to secure a better, brighter smile with the help of orthodontia. You should never feel silly about having braces, especially when Invisalign options are available too.

Your orthodontist will thank you tremendously when you take the time to get to stop doing these things. You will risk less damage to your teeth, and you are much more likely to end up with results that you absolutely love.
