Choosing The Type Of Dentist You Need

When people have a dental problem, they will naturally go to a dentist to get their problem solved. Many people don't realize just how many dental specialties there are, however. It's important when going to a dentist to see the one that you really need for your specific problem. Below is a list of the types of dentists you might go to and the services each type specializes in. However, keep in mind that (in most instances) you will not be able to go directly to a specialist without a referral from your family dentist. This is because your insurance company is unlikely to pay for these specialized services until your family dentist confirms that you need them.

Family Dentist

A family dentist (also known as a general dentist) is the one that you usually see for the most common procedures you need to have performed. This includes things like regular checkups, teeth cleaning, fillings, root canals, crowns and oral health screenings. Your family dentist will have a 4 year doctoral degree in dentistry, and if necessary will refer you to another dental specialist.

Endodontist

If you need a root canal, your family dentist may decide to send you to an endodontist. This dental specialist focuses on the inner parts of the teeth. Endodontists remove infected tissues and refill the nerve canal.

Orthodontist

If you do not have proper facial balance or a proper bite, your family dentist may decide to refer you to a qualified orthodontist. An orthodontist designs and installs retainers, braces and other appliances intended to realign your teeth.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

If you have serious facial injuries or jaw disorders, or you need to have reconstructive surgery, dental implants or wisdom teeth removed, your family dentist will probably send you to an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon.

Periodontist

Periodontists, such as Cumberland Periodontal Associate, deal with diseases of the jawbone and gum. If your family dentist determines that you have periodontitis or gingivitis, he or she may refer you to a periodontist.

Pediatric Dentist

Your family dentist may choose to direct you to a pediatric dentist if you have small children or teenagers who require dental work. Pediatric dentists are specifically trained in how to treat the dental problems of children.

Prosthodontist

If your family dentist decides that you need dentures, crowns, implants or bridges, you may be referred to a prosthodontist. This is a dentist that specializes in designing, building and fitting replacement teeth.
